SPORTS governing body NCS insists Roger Ddungu is still the Uganda Amateur Boxing Federation president because he did not resign properly.

National Council of Sports said yesterday that Ddungu should have handed his executive his resignation letter and not to NCS. He should also have given a 30-day notice as per the federation constitution.

“The constitution provides that he (Ddungu) had to resign to the executive. His vice president would then take over the administration before fresh elections,” said NCS general secretary Jasper Aligawesa.

Ddungu resigned moments after the constitutional review assembly trimmed his powers and reduced the club affiliation fees from sh0.6m to sh30,000 per annum. He wrote to NCS, citing a busy schedule in his new role of Uganda Olympic Committee president as the reason for his resignation.

The new development has opened another saga to the amateur boxing administration which has spent over eight months without meaningful activity. A section of clubs broke away to form a rival body Uganda Amateur Boxing Clubs Association and held a few tournaments before the ministry intervened to stop them.

According to the constitution, Dr. Ntege Ssengendo, Ddungu’s administration vice president was meant to take over the management of UABF if Ddungu resigns through the right channels.

“We do not want to overstep the association’s constitution. What we want is to do everything in accordance with the constitution and that is why we have advised the minister to revisit the situation,” said Aligawesa.

One of the biggest boxing promoters Sam Lukanga also resigned after Ddungu’s exit.

Last week, NCS refused to take custody of the boxing body’s assets with Aligawesa arguing that he had not been notified.
