PRINCE Eriakesi Ngobi Kiregeya has been named the new cultural chief of Kigulu in Busoga Kingdom. Lt. Col. Chris Mudoola and Prince Patrick Izimba are also struggling for the leadership of the same chiefdom as a prerequisite to contest for the position of Kyabazinga (king) of Busoga.

After a heated debate during a meeting in Iganga last week, it was resolved that Kiregeya takes over leadership of Kigulu chiefdom. Izimba boycotted the meeting, which was attended by 103 royals from Kigulu.

The resolution has already been communicated to the Issabalangira (chief prince) of Busoga, Daudi Kaunhe Wakooli. However, a follow-up meeting of the Kigulu royals recently convened at Namungalwe sub-county headquarters in Iganga district to announce the resolution, did not take place because only Kiregeya turned up.

Mudoola told The New Vision: “The meeting had been postponed to May 3. I know nothing about reconciliation with anyone. This is an ongoing process and we have not yet reached any consensus.”

However, Hussein Egonda Walusansa, a Kigulu elder, said Mudoola, who initiated and facilitated the reconciliatory meetings, had communicated that he would not attend due to “unavoidable circumstances”.

“I know Mudoola cannot fear to come here since he started the entire process, but it is interesting that he sent his apology message through a radio announcement yet he lives near the venue of the meeting,” Walusansa said.

Mudoola usually pays the transport allowances, but because of his absence, some royals walked home.

Kiregeya urged the Kigulu royals to stop fighting. He encouraged them to unite and contest for the Kyabazingaship.

“Let us unite and go for the bigger challenge of leading Busoga before it becomes too late,” he said.
Kiregeya was once a crown prince during the reign of the late Kyabazinga, Henry Wako Muloki, before losing the title to the late Christopher Tibatemwa.

Izimba was made the Kigulu chief by Muloki. He insisted that he was the only chief of Kigulu, adding that he had already undergone the cultural rituals of sitting on the throne of the chiefdom.

“You do not just wake up to claim cultural leadership like Mudoola or Kiregeya. I am the rightful leader and that is the way it will be,” Izimba said.

Busoga kingdom has not had a king for six months following the death of Muloki last September. After controversial polls on October 31, Columbus Muloki was elected his father’s successor, but his election was nullified in December.
