Opposition politicians who claim the NRM Government has done nothing to promote development are shameless and do not understand issues of governance, President Yoweri Museveni said over the weekend.

Development in Uganda today, he noted, was a result of the peace ushered in by the NRM Government and local revenues collected to pay for universal primary education and grants to districts.

Citing Isingiro district, the President reminded people that the district had only three shops at Kabingo trading centre in the 1970s, whereas it is now a bustling business centre.

“Those who say the Movement has forgotten Isingiro do not know how a country is governed. They think food drops from heaven. They do not understand that the services we extend to them come through hard work and sweat,” Museveni said.

He promised that the Government would finance the tarmacking of the Mbarara-Kikagate road, which passes through Isingiro, and extend electricity to parts of Bukanga county, which include Rugaaga and Endiizi sub-counties.

The President was chief guest at a fundraising event for the completion of the Isingiro district headquarters. The function took place at the new district administration offices in Ishozi.

Isingiro leaders had initially disagreed over the location of the headquarters.

Those who wanted them in Kamuli petitioned the IGG, claiming the land in Ishozi was illegally purchased.

But Museveni intervened and ordered the construction to proceed at the Ishozi site, arguing it was more strategic and accessible to the public.

The district chairperson, Ignatius Byaruhanga, said the first phase of the construction, in February last year, cost sh800m.

It consists of an administration block with 50 offices, a water department and a district council hall.

Another sh540m is needed to construct a health department and furnish the offices.

Almost half that amount, sh252m, was raised in cash and pledges during the event. Museveni pledged sh150m and auctioned three cows at sh6m.

The President revealed that he had a close relationship with Isingiro because residents of the border district gave him sanctuary during the armed struggle as he traversed from Tanzania.
