EDITOR—On Monday, The New Vision reported a very sad incident that reveals the backwardness of Uganda’s court system. This was in the story entitled “Defilement victim flees from court”. It is rare that I use the strong word ‘backwardness’, but in the circumstances I must do so.

According to the report, a 10-year-old girl ran out of the magistrate’s court at Entebbe on seeing the man who was accused of having sexually assaulted her in 2004.

This incident should sound warning bells to Uganda’s justice system in handling victims of rape especially when they are children.

You would think that with all the educated judges Uganda has, some of whom have received training in developed countries, that they would be sensitive enough to such cases and get such a girl to give evidence on video or in private as the judge later did.
