GEOFFREY Nyero’s tournament best performance came on the final day but it was still on time as it helped the U-19 national team win the ICC African Division 1 World Cup Qualifier on Monday.

There is a lot to savour from Uganda’s brilliant performance at the just concluded event in Zambia and none more so than Nyero’s individual epic show against Sierra Leone.

‘Job Job’, as the youngster is known, bowled a memorable eight-over quota as there will ever be. Opening the protection of Uganda’s innings of 94 runs, Nyero showed no restraint and took 6 for 7 runs with five maidens.

Earlier, team-mate Henry Ssennyondo managed 4-15 in Uganda’s four-wicket win over Nigeria. That was bettered by Ahmed Sangua’s 4-10 in a similar victory over Zambia. Deus Muhumuza went one better with 5-12 as they got past Tanzania.

Uganda’s 48 run victory meant the U-19 cricketes made it to the final qualification tournament, the Global Qualifier later this year.

Uganda and Sierra Leone advanced and will join Afghanistan, Hong Kong, two from the Americas, East Asia-Pacific and Europe regions in a play-off. Five teams will advance to the 2010 World Cup in Kenya.
