Twenty best science and mathematics teachers stand a chance of winning a study trip to Malaysia this year.
This follows a recent contest in which teachers exhibited their skills in teaching science and mathematics. Each teacher stood before his fellow teachers to demonstrate how he instructs his class.
The 20 benefiting teachers will include five for each subject — mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry.
In addition to the one-month training, the teachers will walk away with a new laptop, courtesy of Africa Online.
Speaking at the ceremony at Kololo Senior Secondary School, Mary Ntete Guntees, a senior education officer in the Ministry of Education said the competition was to encourage teachers to plan well and demystify the stereotype that math and sciences are hard to pass.
Super Science and Mathematics Teachers Competitions are organised annually at regional centres across the country where every teacher, irrespective of region, religion, school background or tribe, is free to participate.
This year, only 30 out of 105 science and mathematics teachers across the country participated. The competition, since its inception three years ago, has seen over 40 teachers study abroad courtesy of Japan International Cooperation Agency.
Ntete said the competition encourages teachers’ creativity and innovativeness. Ntete added that teachers who demonstrate the best learner centered approach of good, actual and practical class room practices using the available material stood the chance to win the study trip.
