FUFA, MTN strike deal on inter-regional football

FUFA and MTN have reached an agreement that will see the telecommunications company bankroll the inter-regional football championship due in the northern Uganda town of Lira.

FUFA and MTN have reached an agreement that will see the telecommunications company bankroll the inter-regional football championship due in the northern Uganda town of Lira. MTN are also the official sponsors of the national soccer team the Cranes.

The inter-regional competition that is being revived after close to 20 years is slated for June 7-15. It has been moved from Kampala to Lira a proposal aimed to attract the sponsor.

FUFA chief executive Edgar Watson announced at the weekly PostBank FUFA press conference at Mengo yesterday that MTN had committed themselves to sponsoring the week-long event. The monetary package is yet to be revealed.

“MTN have confirmed to us that they have taken over (the inter-regional competition) and they will announce what is contained in their package when they launch it on May 22,” Watson told journalists yesterday.

A FUFA insider, who did not want to be named said thet package includes cash prizes, trophies, MTN souvenirs, accommodation and transport for the teams.

Six FUFA regions are set to compete at the competition with the winners getting prizes and trophies. The winning region will also have the luxury of hosting the Cranes for matches, while the best eleven picked from all the regions will face the national team at Namboole.

Greater North and West Nile regions which previously competed as one team have now been split into two to compete against Kampala, Buganda, Eastern and Western regions.
