Security has been tightened on the MV Kalangala ferry following increased passenger bookings.

The management of the vessel that plies from Nakiwogo landing site in Entebbe to the island district of Kalangala, recently introduced check-points for all passengers and luggage.

The manager, Peter Zake, said there was need to ensure the safety of life and property of the passengers.

“Given the terrorism threat worldwide, we cannot take chances,” said Zake.

He said the number of local and foreign visitors to the island had increased.

About 50% of the passengers on the vessel, Zaake said, are tourists.

He noted that Nakiwogo market vendors had resisted the move to fence off the lake shores, saying it would disrupt their business.

The vendors, however, accepted to vacate after getting assurance from Entebbe Municipal Council that the new market that was being built for them was near completion.

Zake said it is now easier to monitor the area following the decongestion.

He said modern facilities would be put in place at the site.
