BUDDO SS coach Badru Kaka has vowed to enviously defend the highly coveted COPA Coca-Cola title next year.

Buddo who rose from the shadows of former champions St. Mary’s SS Kitende and Standard High in Wakiso, beat Old Kampala SS 2-1 in a thrilling final in Fort Portal on Saturday.

“I am the happiest person now. But I don’t have long celebrations because the main challenge is to make sure we ably defend the trophy. I know it is going to be hard but I am ready to give all my effort,” vowed Kaka, also coach for Naguru FC.

It was a remarkable second attempt for Buddo following their debut in 1997 in Jinja.

The Wakiso outfit displayed a flowing counter attack soccer game initiated by Sadal Damba, Fazil Mwijuke and Joseph Ochaya to deny the 2003 champions ground in a high-paced final.

Ochaya put the champions on the victory path in the 23rd minute when he beat Emma Akol in the Old Kampala goal with a sizzling shot.

The goal seemed to give Buddo more confidence and they increased their attack. The pressure again paid off minutes into the second half when Ismail Segujja netted to ensure the trophy again went to Wakiso.

Old Kampala got a consolation through a Gift Ali penalty towards the end but it was too little too late for the Kampala Central side.

Like his winning coach, team captain Iddi Babu, said: “This is the best moment in my life. We must make sure we defend the trophy,” he remarked.

Old Kampala’s Erisa Ssekisambu, 17, a product of the Kampala Kids League won the golden boot after scoring 22 goals in the two-week championship that drew a record of 70 secondary school teams.

Yusuf Bagoth (Nile High) was voted the Most Valuable Player.

Ssekisambu and Bagoth are part of the COPA Coca-Cola side of 20 that is training in Fort Portal before they travel to Kenya on Thursday for an international friendly.
