Charles Masembe has been appointed by world soccer governing body FIFA to be match referee assessor for the 2010 World Cup qualifier between Zambia and Algeria in Lusaka next month.

This will be Masembe’s first football-related appointment ever since he was dropped as the Ugandan soccer federation FUFA Chief Executive Officer two months ago. Masembe is a former international referee who handled the 1996 Nations Cup final match.

“He is still a football commissioner and that is why he was appointed.

We did not interfere with his appointment that is direct from FIFA and we are proud he is carrying the Ugandan flag,” said federation publicist Rogers Mulindwa when contacted for comment.

The June 20 appointment will see Masembe assess Cameroon referees headed by Raphael Evehe.

Evehe officiated in the second round qualifier match between Uganda and Niger in Kampala. Uganda beat Niger 1-0, but failed to advance to the next stage having finished third in their group.

Relatedly, Mohammed Segonga has also been appointed by FIFA to officiate at the World Cup qualifier between Gabon and Cameroon.

Segonga will be assisted by Hussein Bugembe and Ali Tomusange, with Fred Mufta travelling as a FIFA fourth official.

“We made the changes to take care of KCC and their continental campaign and keep the league running at the same time,” Ssebuliba explained.
