A security guard, his girl-friend and a four-month-old baby girl died when fire gutted a health centre III hostel in Bugoye sub-county, Kasese district on Sunday.

The health unit, supported by Finland-based Malhem League for Child Welfare and the Ministry of Health, serves as a learning centre for various universities in the country.

The sub-county councillor, Benson Kikumbwa Baguma, on Monday said the fire burnt beds, mattresses and the health centre registry. Seven rooms, medical equipment and supplies worth millions of shillings were also destroyed in the inferno that started at about 2:00am.

The district leaders, including the resident district commissioner, James Mwesigye, visited the area to convey condolences to the bereaved families.

The officer in-charge of criminal investigations, Henry Mbabazi, identified the dead as Elias Rukundo, a Group 4 Security guard attached to Noremco Power Construction Company, Juliet Kobusinge, Rukundo’s girl-friend and a four-month-old baby girl said to be a child of a teacher at Rwenzori High School.

Rukundo was renting a room at the hostel where officials were found wrapping the charred bodies in polythene bags.

Mbabazi said the fire was believed to have started from Rukundo’s room. “We have not established the cause or motive of the fire and have not arrested any suspects yet,” the CID chief said.
