A night watchman, who shot dead a colleague after a quarrel at work, was convicted with manslaughter and sentenced to four years in jail by a High Court in Luweero district.

Justin Emuru was convicted by Justice Benjamin Kabiito, who presided over a high court session held in Luweero on Tuesday. Emuru, who committed the offence last year, was initially charged with murder, but it was later amended to manslaughter.

Prosecution told court that Emuru was guarding Uganda Microfinance Bank in Kizito zone, Luweero, on December 7, 2007, when he picked a quarrel with the deceased whom he shot using a gun. Court heard that after the incident, the accused fled the murder scene, but was later arrested.

Emuru’s counsel, Sowali Katamba, however prayed for leniency, saying his client was a first offender and had not wasted court’s time by pleading guilty.

Katamba also said his client was a young man who would reform.

The Judge said the charge carried a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, but sentenced the accused to four years.
