A woman recently stole a three-month-old baby girl from Nalufenya Children’s Ward in Jinja Hospital. Nurses said the baby had been at the hospital with her mother for a week after she was admitted with severe pneumonia. They added that her condition had improved.

Sam Keibanda, a social worker at the hospital, said the baby’s mother, Teddy Manjeru, was washing clothes under a shade at around 10:00am when she asked another woman who also had a sick child to watch her baby. Manjeru said she needed to pick something from the intensive care ward.

Keibanda added that when Manjeru returned, the woman told her that when she left the baby started crying so much and another woman offered to carry her.

Manjeru was told that the woman mysteriously disappeared with the child. Keibanda said nurses told her that they had seen a woman without a baby squeezing into the queue with other mothers, but they did not expect any foul play.

The Police arrested a woman suspected to be involved, but she was later released.
Jinja Hospital medical superintendent Dr. Benon Wanume urged mothers to always take good care of their children.
He also appealed to the public to report to authorities any person suspected to be having a stolen child.

This is the second case of child theft at the hospital in two years.
