THE Prime Minister’s office is distributing food and planting materials to the people in Teso region whose gardens were destroyed by floods a week ago, writes Aidah Nanyonjo.

The items that included posho, beans, and cassava cuttings were given to residents of Wera, Abarilera sub-counties in Amuria district and Malera in Bukedea district.

Handing over the items at Wera Social Centre on Sunday, the state minister for disaster preparedness, Musa Ecweru, promised the locals medicine and mosquito nets to reduce the number of malaria cases that may result due to the floods.

“We have distributed some food, but it is not enough for all the affected sub-counties. All the victims should get food,” Ecweru added.

He said the technical staff in the Ministry of Health would ensure that all the affected areas receive both qualitative and quantitative relief.

Ecweru added that the flooded roads still limit relief distribution because most roads are impassable. He thanked the Food and Agricultural Organisation for its support and asked other organisations to help.

The floods destroyed 29 classrooms, 28 teachers’ houses and 15 pit latrines in different schools in Katakwi district.

The affected schools were Atoroma, Ngariam, Ocwiin, Abwanget Toroma Boys, Orimai and Magoro. Olelai, Abwokodia, Usuk Boys, Aakum, Okolimo, Ocorimongin, Omosingo, Adacar and Akoboi primary schools were also damaged.
