Uganda finishes 3rd in Twenty20

UGANDA produced one of their best performance in recent years before falling to Test nation, Bangladesh in the four-nation Twenty20 trial series to finish third here yesterday.

UGANDA produced one of their best performance in recent years before falling to Test nation, Bangladesh in the four-nation Twenty20 trial series to finish third here yesterday.

Former world champions, Pakistan atoned for their dismal show in the world cup to win the series with a clean sheet after whitewashing Kenya by eight wickets yesterday.
Bangladesh, with two wins to their credit took second position with winless Kenya taking fourth and last position on the leader board.

It was an impressive show by Uganda who came here as underdogs. They had lost to Pakistan by 148 runs before beating Kenya by two wickets in their second game.

Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat, but Uganda restricted them to 145-5 in the 20 overs.

Emmanuel Issaneez proved a hard nut to crack for the Pakistanis, taking two wickets for 21 runs. Joel Olweny (2-29) was another top performer for the east African nation.

Chasing a target of 146 runs to clinch the game, Uganda reached 124 for the loss of nine wickets, thus succumbing by 21 runs.

Mashrafee bin Mortaza of Pakistan took the man-of-the match US$500 (sh0.8m) top prize of for his bowling prowess that saw him take two wickets and 40 runs of 20 balls.

After receiving the prize for a job well done, Mortaza gave it to Uganda captain Olweny in recognition for Uganda’s splendid exploits against them.

Kenya’s poor show left many wondering what they can achieve Twenty20 world championships in South starting on September 11.

Peter Ong’ondo was the best player with 16 runs to his credit and for taking one wicket for 11 against Pakistan.

Uganda paraded four players from the U-19 team that reached the semi-finals of the ICC tournament in South Africa Peter Mukasa, Charles Waiswa, Arthur Kyobe and Ronald Ssemanda.

Kenya also lost to Bangladesh by five wickets.
