East African clearing and forwarding agents will trained in order to facilitate trade in the region.

“Clearing agents lack competence, knowledge, professionalism and efficiency due to the fact that they acquire skills on job without formal training,” Charles Nuwagaba, the Uganda Revenue Authority’s Customs Department assistant commissioner, said.

“Since 2004, efforts have been geared towards uplifting the standards for the clearing and forwarding industry,” he said.

Nuwagaba was sensitising clearing and freight forwarding agents at the Grand Imperial Hotel.

The programme is aimed at providing skills to freight forwarding associations to do their work professionally.

“The training will equip them with skills to enhance ethical conduct, integrity and performance to move the industry fast in a competitive global economy.”
