THE technology of televisions is improving each day to cater for customers’ needs. Apart from the flat and plasma screens that have been selling like hot cakes, we now have the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) television sets on the market.

An LCD television is a flat, thin, slim display device with a flat back.
The television set is a high technology product with 921600 thin film transistors, giving you fine picture details.

The LCD is based on the properties of polarised light. Two thin panels sandwich a thin liquid crystal gel that is divided into individual pixels.

LCD television sets come in different models. Some have provision for a picture card slot while others do not.
Ram Pratheeban, a manager at Best Connections Limited on William Street, says LCD television sets have many advantages.

“Unlike the ordinary television sets, the LCD television set is user-friendly and not dangerous to people’s health because it uses liquid as opposed to the ordinary television sets that emit rays, which are harmful to human life.

Therefore, since it does not emit rays one can sit close to it with out damaging their eyes,” Pratheeban say.
He adds that an LCD television set is lighter than the ordinary sets. So it can be carried and used anywhere at any time.

Since LCD television sets come with different provisions, for example a picture card slot, you can access pictures on a picture card while at the same time recording television programmes as you watch.

All you need is a memory card for recording and playing back pictures. However, Pratheeban advises that the picture card should be fitted in a picture card adapter first before fixing it in the card slot.

He explains that technology has now improved and one can have a television set ranging from as small as five inches to 64 inches, which has not been possible with plasma screens.

To enhance its use, the LCD television is easy to adjust to any angle. You can also tilt it vertically by tilting the screen up to five degrees forward or ten degrees backward. It can also be rotated up to 25 degrees so that one can watch comfortably.

Joseph Kalule, a sales manager at Best Connections, says: “Using an LCD television set helps to save space because one can hang it on the wall since it comes with a handle.”

The television also comes with a headphone jack. With this, one can listen to music on the television without disrupting the people around. When one plugs in the headphone mini plug, no sound will be heard from the main unit speakers.

Kalule advises people to look at the number of pixels of the television before buying an LCD television set. The recommendable pixels should range from 800,000 pixels.

He also advises people to buy LCD television sets from recognised dealers to avoid buying poor quality or duplicate equipment.

Kalule emphasises that it is better to buy LCD television sets from where one will be offered a warrant, of preferably one year.

LCD television sets are available at Best Connections Limited on William Street and Kengrow Industries on Jinja Road.

An LCD television screen with a card slot costs sh1.75m while one without a card slot costs sh1.65m.
