A TOTAL of 35 people died in accidents in Kampala last month, the Police announced yesterday. Kampala Extra Police spokesman Simeo Nsubuga said the dead included 20 pedestrians, one passenger, seven motorcyclists, six pedal cyclists and a driver.

He said the figure was 10 more that those who died in July.

Nsubuga told journalists at the Central Police Station in Kampala that the deaths occurred in 32 fatal accidents.

During the same period, 448 people sustained serious injuries while 42 were slightly injured. A total of 1,329 accidents occurred in August, 392 of then serious and 605 were slight.

In July, there were 376 serious accidents and 524 slight ones, Nsubuga said, adding that the accidents were caused by speeding, recklessness and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police in July said 183 people died in accidents between January and June.
“We are alarmed by accidents on our roads,” said the Police spokesman, Asan Kasingye.

He announced that the force had acquired 12 speed guns to be used against reckless drivers on highways.
He added that parking of trailers along roads in Kampala and the countryside had been banned.

“They are responsible for some of the accidents. We shall tow them to police stations at the owners’ expense,” he said.

He noted that the trucks were sometimes parked on both sides of the road, reducing the space.

He cited Lukaya, Lyantonde and Mbiko trading centres as the common spots where trailers park.
