Government announces new car taxes

THE Government has released the new list of registration fees for used cars being imported into the country. The new fees should have taken effect from July 1 but the Finance minister Ezra Suruma introduced them only on Wednesday. They were subsequently passed into law.

THE Government has released the new list of registration fees for used cars being imported into the country. The new fees should have taken effect from July 1 but the Finance minister Ezra Suruma introduced them only on Wednesday. They were subsequently passed into law.

Registration of saloon cars will cost sh500,000. Passenger vehicles with a capacity of less than 28 people will pay sh700,000, while medium and heavy omnibuses with a capacity of more than 28 passengers will be charged sh850,000.

Another category, classified as ambulances, prison vans and funeral cars, pay sh250,000. Motorcycles, too, will be charged sh250,000.

Agricultural tractors will part with sh250,000. Goods vehicles with a loading capacity of less than two tonnes will pay sh650,000, two to seven tonnes sh750,000, seven to 10 tonnes sh850,000, while those with a capacity of above ten tonnes and prime movers will pay sh1million.

Those who want a personalised number plate will have to cough up sh5m for a vehicle and sh1m for a motorcycle. Vehicles-owners who want to change their number plate will be charged sh500,000 re-registration fees.
Dealers of motor vehicles will pay a licence of sh150,000 per year.

Additional OTV fees have been introduced for commercial vehicles. OTV refers to Owner Transport Vehicle, a provision that enables owners of tucks carry people, like personnel, to construction sites. Commercial vehicles not exceeding two tonnes loading capacity will be charged sh60,000 per year, while those above two tonnes will pay sh150,000.

Transfer fees for motorcycles will from now on be sh30,000, for motorcars sh40,000, while other motor vehicles, trailers, tractors or engineering plants will be required to pay sh60,000.

The new rates for driving permits, too, were released. A driving permit for one year will cost sh25,000, and for three years sh45,000. To renew a permit, one needs to pay sh20,000 and sh30,000 respectively. In addition, a fee of sh20,000 will be charged for a computerised driving permit, both original ones and renewals.

Those who want to de-register their vehicles for export will pay sh150,000 for motorcycles, sh250,000 for salon cars, sh300,000 for station wagons and omnibuses, sh350,000 for commercial vehicles, sh500,000 for agricultural trailers and sh2m for agricultural tractors.

Vehicle examination and inspection fees will be sh2,000 for motorcycles, sh5,000 for cars and sh3,000 for agricultural tractors.
