DID you know that perfume is as seductive as a deep sonorous voice? Nothing turns heads like a man who smells lovely. A woman can trust such a man in terms of personal hygiene because perfume does not work well with unwashed bodies.

This is a secret that Kampala Mayor, Nasser Sebaggala unearthed a long time ago. Not only is he a sharp dresser, he also pays attention to grooming, wrapping up his image with a lovely, masculine fragrance. It was this that led me to shake hands with him in the parking lot at Garden City.

It was not his grey suit, pale pink shirt and dark pink tie and well-polished black shoes that drew my attention. Rather, the whiff of his perfume made me stop, turn back and say hello. Yes, perfume is magnetic, attracting people to you and even making them more pleasant and helpful. It is a weapon that every man should use. It tells others that you pay attention to detail and leave nothing to chance. Smelling nice can open doors for you because people will want to be around you. Few people appreciate unpleasant body odour.

However, perfume can also cause people to flee from you, especially if it is too strong and offensive.
Go for perfume that is subtle, but effective. Avoid scents that are too strong, tend to invade other people’s private space and disrupt the workplace.

Remember that some of your colleagues might have allergic reactions to scents.
Save strong scents for cooler times like evening functions. People are less stressed in the evening and are more able to tolerate strong scents. Also, temperature has a way of altering the smell of perfume.

Today’s scents are inspired by the man-about-town who is confident, focused and a go-getter. That is why the contemporary man must always wear a deodorant, after shave lotion and balm and some scent or perfume.

It is always better to buy a whole range of the same product because it helps in layering perfume and keeping you smelling fresh the whole day. This means that your shower gel or soap, aftershave and perfume are from the same range.

TIPS ON BUYING PERFUME

  • Perfume helps to enhance your total image. It is, therefore, important that it matches with your natural scent.

  • Take note of your skin type. Dry skin needs more perfume, while oily skins needs less.

  • Perfume must complement your personality. If you are outgoing and a go-getter, go for a scent like L’Homme by Yves Saint Laurent. This scent was launched last year, so be prepared to spend up to sh200,000, depending on the amount you buy. Go to upmarket men’s boutiques for an original scent.

  • Avoid cheap perfume because it does not last and actually smells cheap. Expensive perfume lasts longer on the skin and in the bottle and lifts your profile.

  • How to apply perfume

The best time to apply perfume is immediately after a bath or shower because the pores are open and, therefore, more absorbent.

Apply perfume on warm areas like the inside of the elbow, on the wrist, neck and back of the knees. These areas have pulse points that help develop the perfume from the top note through to the base note.

So much is put into perfume that it can take up to an hour for you to get to smell the actual scent which is usually the base.
