JAS Mangat, whose performance will certainly be boosted by a powerful Subaru N 10, poses a major threat to National Rally Championship front-runner Ponsiano Lwakataka in the UMOSPOC Challenge rally today.

Mangat, who previously put up remarkable performances in an less powered Golf GTI, is expected to greatly step up his pace.
Mangat, making a maiden outing in the Subaru, will be flagged off second to Lwakataka at Emerald Hotel on Bombo road at 8:00am.

Lwakataka, who is assured of clinching the 2007 National Rally Championship, following the absence of top rival Ronald Ssebuguzi, admitted that Mangat would be a hard nut to crack.

“He is always in the route doing recce, I can’t take him for granted. He has a powerful car, I consider him as dangerous as any other top driver,” Lwakataka remarked.

“But if I win, I don’t expect him to claim he was yet to get used to the car.”
Bob Roberts (Mitsubishi Evo4) and Jamal Mustapha (Subaru) are also expected to feature prominently in the single leg rally.

FrontPage Microfinance flag-bearer Susan ‘Super Lady’ Muwonge and rookie Leonard Bagarukayo, who have had an impressive season, should not be ruled out of contention as well. Competitors will tackle four sections in Wakiso and Luwero that will be repeated twice.

Meanwhile, Yana Tyres yesterday boosted the crew of Edson Mungereza and Leon Ssenyange with a new set of tyres ahead of today’s event. The firm has been sponsoring the crew since the beginning of the season.
