CONSTRUCTION work on the Nguse Bridge, which separates Kibaale from Hoima district, has stalled after the contractor, Omega Building Constructors, abandoned the job.

The engineer in charge of bridges, Aloysius Orach, said the contractors stopped working about four months ago after the Ministry of Works ordered them to redo the work.

“Omega became uncooperative when we directed them to rectify the defects on the bridge. The lower part of the bridge had developed cracks even before the work was finished. There was also a bend on the bridge. We cannot establish death traps on our roads.”

The project was estimated to cost sh371m. Orach said the contractor had received part of the money.
Ministry officials said they would soon declare the road impassable and they would sue the contractors.
