A POLICE woman was fighting for her life at Mulago Hospital yesterday after the driver of a commuter taxi she was inspecting suddenly sped off, dragging her along the tarmac.

The 8:00a.m accident in which Evelyn Aneki, attached to the Wandegeya Police Station, sustained injuries, occurred at Nakulabye, Kampala.

According to the Kampala Extra Police spokesman, Simeo Nsubuga, Aneki, who was controlling traffic, waved to the driver of the taxi at a nearby junction to stop.

Moments after she had started examining the vehicle, the unidentified driver drove off, leaving her sprawled on the ground after dragging her along the carriageway.

A Good Samaritan’s vehicle later whisked the injured and groaning Police officer to Mulago Hospital.
Aneki, who joined the traffic department at Wandegeya two months ago, was admitted to Ward 3B.

When The New Vision visited her, she could not talk.

According to a medical report attached to her bed, she sustained multiple bruises on the legs and a deep cut on the head.

The report added that she was bleeding from the nose and ears by the time she got to the hospital.
Her brother, who declined to be named, said the hospital authorities were yet to carry out an X-ray.

Aneki’s husband, Apully Potund, said she was recently transferred to Wandegeya from Kakiri Police Station in Wakiso district.

“She is mandated to control traffic but you just knock her and drive off! This is a serious case of indiscipline,” Nsubuga told journalists at the Central Police Station in Kampala.

He said investigations were ongoing.

The New Vision learnt that the taxi plies the New Taxi Park-Bwaise route on Sir Apollo Kaggwa Road.
The junction where the incident occurred is one of the busiest in the city especially in the morning and evening rush hours.

This is the second Police officer to be knocked down by a motorist in two weeks.

Another officer was hit by a speeding vehicle at the newly-created junction on Jinja Road in Kampala recently.
