KAMWOKYA Market vendors have accused Kampala City Council of ignoring their pleas to be allowed to re-develop their market.

During a meeting between the vendors and local leaders at the market recently, Yusuf Senoga, the chairman of Kamwokya Market Vendors and Stall owners Association, said they put in their request at the beginning the year but they have not got any feedback.

The co-ordinator for the market re-development, Francis Mbaziira, wondered why KCC had failed to hand over the market to the firm which won the tender to run it two months ago.
KCC took over the management of the market in March.

Mbaziira expressed worries that the delay could be a tactic by KCC to offer the market to a private investor.
He said they have already identified a bank which is willing to give them a loan to redevelop the market. The vendors are planning to set up a modern shopping complex.

“The market is in a sorry state. It becomes impassable when it rains. We wonder why KCC cannot allow us to redevelop it,” Senoga said.
