The new system, which is aimed at curbing over overcrowding, will be effected in January 2008.

According to the deputy vice-chancellor for academic affairs, Dr. Lilliane Tibatemwa Ekirikubinza, there will be a graduation week that will be held only once a year.

During the week, the main event will feature only PhD and Masters graduates at the Freedom Square and the occasion will be presided over by the Chancellor.

She said faculties will conduct different graduation ceremonies for undergraduates, which will be officiated by either the vice-chancellor or his two deputies.

There will be inspirational speeches from selected alumni of the university, Ekirikubinza added.

Meanwhile, over 6,000 students will graduate during the 55th and 56th graduation ceremonies on Thursday and Friday, the Academic Registrar, Amos Olur-Odur, has said.

Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, the out-going Chancellor, is expected to preside over the two functions which will bring an end to the mass graduation ceremonies.

A new chancellor is yet to be appointed by the President after the university seconded Prof. Mondo Kagonyera and vice-president Prof. Gilbert Bukenya.
