SPORTS minister Charles Bakkabulindi has re-echoed government’s support for an artificial turf at Nakivubo, but recommended the appointment of a committee of six to internalise its details and effects.

The world soccer governing body donated to Uganda the facility valued at $800,000 (sh1.4bn) under the “Win Africa for Africa project”. Its installation stalled after Nakivubo and the soccer body failed to agree on its implementation.

At a meeting in Kampala yesterday, Bakkabulindi counselled that the committee draws representatives from the ministry, the federation and Nakivubo. He gave them two weeks to consult and ensure that the project takes off.

“The government has no problem with FIFA or the turf. We cherish sports development and that is why I gave a go ahead to have the turf at Nakivubo,” Bakkabulindi told the meeting that included sports commissioner Dan Tamwesigire and his assistant Omara Apitta.

“We should avoid intrigue and dramatising issues,” the minister stressed.

FUFA chief executive Charles Masembe and Nakivubo board boss Godfrey Kisekka led the respective representatives.
