TEN private security firms have been closed by the Inspector General of Police, for what he described as “operating below required standards.”

This brings the number of deregistered private security firms to 20 since last year.

There are 71 registered security firms. Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, in a communication read out by Kampala Extra Police spokesman Simeo Nsubuga, said the firms were shut down due to failure to submit monthly returns, poor welfare and flouting of training rules.

“The deregistered firms have not been paying their staff, forcing them to engage in subversive acts such as theft and robbery,” said Nsubuga.

The security organisations include Aloysius and Associates Private Investigators in Bukasa, Axis Security Services, BRZ and Interid Uganda Ltd on Jinja Road, Kampala. Others are K9 Patrol in Ntinda, Maxima Force Ltd, Swila Security Services Ltd in Namuwongo, Security of Eagle and Eye Nature Ltd, Instant Security Systems and Nile Investigators Group.

Kahiyura warned that other security firms that do not comply with the security standards would also be closed down.

Police statistics indicate that about sh200m was lost due to 146 recorded robberies linked to private guards last year.
