BRIGADIER Elly Kayanja has called for tycoon Michael Ezra’s rescue in a sh 120m fundraising drive for boxer Badru Lusambya’s world title fight.

“If there’s anyone with his contact please bring it. We would love him to come on board,” appealed the Deputy Director of Intelligence Agencies, an ardent boxing fan.

Ezra on Tuesday fulfilled his $100,000 (sh174m) pledge to the national soccer side the Cranes for their African Nations Cup qualification efforts.

Kayanja was yesterday launching the fundraising at Centenary Park for the November 25 fight between Lusambya and WBC International champion Lucky Lewele.

Kampala Central LC 3 Chairman Godfrey Nyakana echoed Kayanja’s call before contributing $800 (sh1.39m). Kayanja offered $300 (sh0.52m) towards the cause.

Fight organisers Big Strikers International have to urgently raise $3,500 (sh6.1m) to pay sanction fees to the World Boxing Council International. Kayanja also appealed to corporates to join the campaign.

“Lusambya will make Uganda more visible on the world map if he gets the fight,” noted Nyakana.

If the fight crystallizes, it will be East and Central Africa’s biggest boxing event. A victory for Lusambya will prop him into the world’s top 10.

A place in the cream of the rankings will make Lusambya eligible for a title shot in the prestigious World Boxing Council.
The WBC International is a smaller body than the WBC. But a title in the former guarantees the champion a WBC title shot.

The fight will be part of the CHOGM activities. Kayanja said they have presented a budget to the CHOGM secretariat but are yet to get a response.
Lusambya dispelled fears that the fight was too big for him. “My thirst for victory has been very evident. I will not rest until I win the world title.”
