THE Ugandan, Kenyan and Tanzanian anti-corruption authorities have signed a declaration to deny safe haven to corrupt persons and investment of ill-gotten wealth in the sister countries.

The authorities are; Uganda’s Inspectorate of Government, the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission and the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau of Tanzania.

The heads of the three anti-corruption bodies on Friday signed the declaration at the end of a three-day meeting in Kampala.
Uganda’s Justice Faith Mwondha was elected head of the association.

They agreed to cooperate in extradition, legal assistance, asset recovery and return of the proceeds from corrupt offenders.

“We encourage governments to deny safe haven to corrupt persons, ill-gotten wealth and investment of tainted money in their countries. We want to promote the principle of zero tolerance against corruption,” read part of the declaration.

“Our willingness to enter into this agreement and formation of this association is a true test of each party’s commitment to eliminate corruption.”

Tanzania’s Edward Hoseah said corruption should be fought against with intensity.

“I hope the association shall be an addition to the existing mechanisms and legal frameworks for fighting corruption.”

He asked the public to support the anti-corruption bodies and the new declaration. Justice Aaron Ringera of Kenya said: “Without combating corruption, we shall not have rule of law, economic growth, investment, and respect of human rights.

“Corrupt individuals should not rest in any of the East African countries. It is our role to ensure that they do not win,” he said.
Mwondha urged Rwanda and Burundi, which recently joined the East African Community, to join the association.

“East Africa has so many commonalties. The spirit of cooperation becomes inevitable and forming such an association is inevitable,” she said.
