THE local amateur boxing federation will not change the rules they announced recently for boxers to meet before taking part in any championship.

The executive insists that the rules are meant to reorganise the sport.
The regulations announced require clubs to produce the boxers birth certificate or its equivalent like baptism or voters cards.

They also demand documents from either parents/guardians or local councils permitting the boxers to take part in the sport before weighing in.

However, this has not gone well with the traditional clubs leading several to pull out of the national youth championships due this week. Interestingly upcountry clubs adhered to the requirements.

The federation president Roger Ddungu said it is not a question of who enters a team, but how best the executive can sustain sport in accordance with good sporting practices.

“They told us that the medical test was expensive and we decided to use the federation doctor. They are now complaining that they can not get a letter from a guardian or an LC,” Ddungu wondered.

“What hurts most is that though most boxers have all this documentation, the clubs have refused to hand them in.”

He added that the system is good for the sport. “It’s only systems that will help change the face of boxing. We should leave the past where people just got boxers and called them clubs.

“We want to move to a new level where clubs are defined and sustainable.”

Ddungu insisted that the federation wants to help boxers advance in education. “This can only be done by knowing their current level of education.”

Among the clubs protesting the new move are Samuel Lukanga’s eight clubs, Uganda’s oldest club — Kampala Boxing Club and Nakawa’s East Coast.

Those that have complied include recently formed Gulu, Kakira and Entebbe.
