DAUDI Karungi’s art exhibition entitled Ssh…..Kano Kapya (new stuff), cannot be described in just one word.

The exhibition, which started last Wednesday at Alliance Francaise and Uganda German Cultural Society, portrays Karungi’s main medium as acrylics on canvas.

Through personal observation of his surroundings, Karungi depicts people’s relationships and social practices in a way his mouth cannot. Although his work looks very good in red and blue, A Hard Day’s Work, Life, Hiding Behind Trees and The Mediator, done in other colours are impressive. The canvas and collage pieces Journey One, Bright Sunny Days, Beautiful Sundowns and the yellowish Journey Two are also outstanding.

A fellow artist and friend of Karungi described him as an experimental artist with a free spirit; this is evident in his works.

No wonder, ex-German Ambassador Klaus Holderbaum remarked that the pieces would fit well in people’s homes. A lover of art, Holderbaum, cited Karungi’s colours representing Uganda.

The exhibition which had Kinobe and guitarist Ouma entertains guests, was the first event for Alliance Francaise’s new director Jean Jacques Montourcy, as he only arrived in Uganda recently.

He was accompanied by Jean Baptiste Luciani, the counsellor for Cooperation French Embassy and the deputy Ambassador Madame Chantala Bes. Karungi has participated in exhibitions in Washington DC, North Carolina, USA and Hosbro in Denmark.
