THE Chief of Defence Forces has said the army will pursue the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels if they fail to sign the peace agreement with the Government in Juba.

Gen. Aronda Nyakairima made the remarks on Sunday during the opening of the UPDF Armoured Brigade Field Engineering Regiment at Kasijagirwa in Masaka municipality. He advised the LRA to pursue the negotiations in order to end the conflict peacefully.

Aronda said the UPDF had already started putting in place a process of reconciliation for the LRA rebels.
He also noted that the UPDF had passed out 77 fighters from the LRA and integrated them into the army at a recent ceremony at Kabamba Military Training Ground in Mubende district.

On the ADF remnants, Gen. Nyakairima said the army would continue pursuing them so as to protect the stability of the region and the oil exploration in western Uganda. He announced that the UPDF would recruit more cadet officers next November.

The UPDF chief further explained that the army would re-train officers in a continued bid to professionalise the army.
The Government, Aronda added, had finalised plans to rehabilitate army barracks, especially those located in big towns like Mbarara, Jinja, Masaka and Kampala.

“We do not want to see these military institutions which look like internally displaced people’s camps. We are going to improve that image,” he vowed.
Col. James Mugira, warned the soldiers against the HIV/AIDS pandemic, saying it was a big threat to the army and the nation.

He warned the people in Masaka who had grabbed the UPDF land in Lukaya and Bwala airstrips to prepare for eviction.
Lt. Col. Solomon Amanya, an officer, said his section had finalised plans to install water treatment plants in army institutions. He also said his department had rehabilitated the 14km community road between Kisarizi and Birambo in Kibaale district.
