MUSLIMS worldwide today celebrate Idd El-Fitr, the great Muslim festival marking the end of the holy month of Ramadhan.

The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council has confirmed the celebrations. President Museveni was last evening scheduled to host the Muslim leaders for iftar (breaking of the fast meal) at Hotel Africana in Kampala.

Idd El-Fitr is a public holiday in Uganda.
Earlier, the council’s spokesperson, Nsereko Mutumba, told The New Vision that the main prayers would be held at Gadaffi National Mosque in Old Kampala.
The Mufti, Sheikh Shaban Mubajje, is expected to preside over the prayers, which start at 9:00 am.

“During last Idd El-Fitr prayers, the Mufti promised the Muslims that this year’s prayers would be conducted in the new mosque, and we are fulfiling the promise,” Mutumba said.

Other venues for prayers in and around Kampala are Kibuli Mosque, Nakivubo Stadium, Makerere University and Kololo Mosque near Aga Khan Nursery School.
However, the Muslims in Kenya will celebrate the festival tomorrow, Saturday, according to the Kenya gazette published on Monday.

Meanwhile, the president of the Peoples’ Progressive Party, Jaberi Bidandi Ssali, has congratulated the Muslim community for concluding the Ramadhan. “We pray that the Almighty Allah rewards all of you in accordance with the holy promises of the Quran,” said Bidandi Ssali, the party’s interim chairman in a statement.

“We pray that the faith and exemplary restraint exhibited in the holy month abide in your hearts to the ultimate benefit of all the people in the country.

Bidandi appealed to the Muslim community to pray for fellow Ugandans who have been afflicted by the floods in northern and north-eastern Uganda. He asked those responsible not to divert the assistance for the victims for selfish ends.
