THE Police in Masaka are holding five men who suspected to have robbed passengers of their cash and mobile phones last week.

The southern region Police commander, Andrew Sorowen, identified some of the suspects as David Mwikye, Ronald Ahimbisibwe, Deogratius Byamukamaall and Valencio Twahirwa of Lwengo sub-county.

Sorowen said the men staged an illegal roadblock at Kabalungi near Mbiriizi trading centre on the Masaka-Mbarara highway and used toy guns to rob the passengers at about 3:00am.

However, one of the occupants, Ahairwe Kasiiba, a UPDF soldier attached to the Bombo Army Barracks, fired at them and they fled.

“They disappeared into the bush. One of them was wearing an army uniform but they dumped the toy gun,” Sorowen said.

Kasiiba reported the incident to Mbiriizi Police Post. The Police arrested Mwikye, who led them to his colleagues.

In a separate incident at Kyabakuza, a businessman, Aloysius Mukasa, was also robbed of his mobile phone and sh100,000 by two thugs, Sorowen said.

Residents lynched one of the suspects, Fred Mukasa alias DJ Water of Kyabakuza. His colleague, John Kizza Nsubuga, was rescued by the Police.

Sorowen said the suspects were linked to the recent robberies in the district, adding that they would be charged with robbery.

He warned the residents against moving late in the night.
