EARLY pacesetter Caxton Kalule was eliminated from the Olympiad chess qualifiers at Lugogo after he suffered a fifth loss.

He finished 13th and was ruled out of contention to represent the country at the chess’ premier event to be held in Dresden, Germany in July 2008. The top 12 will compete for five slots on the Ugandan team.

Kalule’s losses started in round eight when experienced Grace Nsubuga unleashed the first defeat of this phase. He then lost in rounds 9, 10, and 11 to Hassan Mulambe, Kenneth Kakooza and Harold Wanyama respectively. Former national junior champion Davis Agaba sealed his fate in the final round.

It was a heart breaker for the 23-year old, who scored six consecutive wins and was hoping to qualify for his maiden event.

Others who missed out are Aviation’s Raphael Buti, Joachim Okoth, former Olympian Stephen Kisuze and John Kikonyogo.

Joel Wegoye and National Junior champion Arthur Seggwanyi joined Kakooza, Nsubuga, Moses Kawuma, and Bob Bibasa. Others are Wanyama, Agaba, Mulambe, Shadrack Kantinti, Simon Gonza and Isaac Munanira.
