SPEKE Resort Munyonyo has hired six hotel managers from South Africa for the Commonwealth summit due next month.

State minister for tourism Serapio Rukundo said the experts will ensure that the Heads of State get world- class services. They will be beefed up by other experts from a Kenyan-based hotel training school, the Utali College, he said.

Speke Resort Munyonyo will accommodate the Heads of Government during CHOGM. “We can now boast of capacity to host big meetings like CHOGM,” the minister said.

The minister’s remark came after MPs had complained that the Munyonyo hotel services were below standard.

Rukundo was yesterday briefing the Parliament select committee on CHOGM about the ministry’s preparedness for the meeting. The committee was chaired by Buikwe North MP Onyango Kakoba. Kibaale Woman MP Juliet Kabonesa (NRM) said Ugandan hotel staff were unprofessional.

“I am worried about the staff at Munyonyo. One time, a friend of mine lost a charger in a hotel room. Are the Heads of State safe with their luggage?” she asked.

Serere MP Emily Otekat (NRM) suggested that the hotel staff be trained to smile at guests. “If the staff are frustrated, they should not extend their frustrations to guests,” Jinja Woman MP Ruth Tuma (NRM) added.

Rukundo said foreign affairs ministers attending the Commonwealth summit will be accommodated at Sheraton Hotel and Golf Course Hotel. Each delegation will have five rooms.
He said the Queen will stay at Serena Hotel in Kampala.

The Government, he added, had booked and paid for all conference venues but the delegates will have to foot their accommodations bills.
