COMMONWEALTH featherweight boxing champion Jackson “Action” Asiku will be stripped of his title next month for failing to defend it inside the six-month mandatory period.

The Commonwealth Boxing Council yesterday communicated to the Australian-based Ugandan boxer about the decision.

Asiku claimed the title with a knock-out win over Marc Callaghan, in 2005. He last defended his belt against Jamie McKeever in June 2006.

“I tried to help Asiku with his career, but some individuals were misleading him and now it has had devastating effects on him,” Danny Lutaaya, a Ugandan boxing agent said.

“I still want to work with him, but my promoters can’t trust him any more.”

Asiku however, still has chance of salvaging his belt if he can find an opponent to challenge him inside this month. Ghana’s Osumanu Akaba is waiting in the wings in case he wants to defend his title against him.

“My plan is to have Tebazalwa take on Akaba if Asiku is not interested in taking him on,” Lutaaya said. “Tebazalwa is back into the swing and we want him to take centre stage now after returning to the ring with a fight against Choi Tseveenpurev recently.”

Asiku, 21 (11 KOS)-3-0, parted company with Lutaaya last year, after the boxer made contact with another promotion company, Shakesphere Promotions, without the latter’s knowledge.
