A few years back the only way of connecting a phone to a computer was via an expensive cable which plugged the phone into one of the computer serial ports.

If your phone can only connect to a computer using a cable, it is time to replace it with one that has bluetooth wireless connection. This is because instead of using many cables for devices that need to communicate with each other, bluetooth can be used.

“Bluetooth is a short range wireless technology, originally intended for cordless headsets, but now used to connect the phone to almost anything. It connects your personal electronic devices, such as laptops, mobile phones, digital cameras, audio equipments, and printers, without the clutter of cables.

Perhaps more importantly, Bluetooth saves time and improves mobility by supporting a portable network anywhere,” says Rizwan Devani, director of Millenium Infotech at Kisementi.

This allows the PC and phone to communicate if they are placed within a certain range of each other.
It is simple and largely foolproof on land, as all you have to do is switch on the Bluetooth facility on both the PC and the phone.

The most widely used Bluetooth devices are the wireless headsets of mobile phones where you are able to talk on the phone while in motion.

In addition to mobile phones, there are also Bluetooth headsets and speakers for portable music players like the iPod.
Another extension of the Bluetooth headset is the hands-free car kit.

This kit allows you to use your voice to operate the phone, and talk on the phone via the car’s built-in audio system.

Mobile email can also be accessed by Bluetooth. For instance, a wireless internet connection can be diverted from a mobile phone to a laptop via Bluetooth. The laptop can be used to browse the internet whenever the phone has a signal.

And with a Bluetooth-enabled printer, you can print photos or documents directly from a digital camera, phone, or laptop.

This type of printer is ideal for field workers or busy professionals.
For file transfers, computers can send files to each other via Bluetooth connections.

You can transfer photos from a phone to a computer, or exchange documents between laptops in a conference room. Bluetooth can be used to provision photos, ringtones, and other multi-media contents from computers.

Unfortunately, not many laptops come with Bluetooth, and so you need to buy a Bluetooth device which plugs into the USB port your computer.

Keep in mind that Bluetooth can be switched on and off at will so don’t leave it on if you are not using it because it drains the battery.
