The private sector should embrace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) since they are aimed at improving the business environment, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) resident representative, Theophane Nikyema, has advised.

“The performance of your companies is affected by factors related to inadequate legal frameworks, weak public sector institutions, bribery and corruption.

Other factors include high levels of poverty and inequality and lack of basic services, all of which can be addressed through the MDGs,” he said at the Kampala Serena Hotel.

Nikyema said the private sector could support achievement of the goals through provision of affordable products, job creation, payment of decent wages, taxes and accountability.

He said the sector could engage in philanthropy targeting education, health, infrastructure, enterprise development, micro finance and support to improve food security.

“The private sector can advocate for environment standards, labour rights, anti-corruption, democratic governance, public investments and corporate accountability.”

He said the private sector should be more creative.
