The increase in the incidence of students’ riots that saw the loss of school property worth hundreds of millions of shillings has led insurance companies to come up with educational insurance products to cover the rampant risks in the sub-sector.

Over the past three years, a number of schools have had property destroyed by rioting students. In 2005, part of Nabumali High School School in Mbale was torched by students. In July, students of St. Maria Gorreti Secondary School in Fort Portal burnt two dormitories while protesting the suspension of 30 of their colleagues for indiscipline. In Rukungiri, Ruhindi High in Kebisoni, Kyamakanda and Makobore High in the town council also held strikes.

“As the risks to school property and students continue to grow amidst strikes and riots, we found it necessary to have insurance cover for the sub-sector,” said Bola Ososanya, the managing director of the National Insurance Corporation.

He said the company had developed a comprehensive educational insurance plan which covers damage to school property, school fees insurance, in case the student’s parents die and student accident insurance, which takes care of the medical bills in case of injury to students while at school .

Bola said schools risk so keeping hundreds of students who are not covered by any form of insurance because in case of accidents, parents have a right to sue for compensation.
