TORORO
Kampala International University (KIU) has started a branch in the district. The KIU eastern spokesperson, Osinde Orach, said the campus, located 2km on Uhuru Drive, would open in December. Osinde said the university would start with two degree and diploma distance programmes in Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts in Education. He said 369 students have registered, adding that the university has offered 70 scholarships to students. Osinde said the establishment of the eastern branch was an effort to bring university education nearer to the region. “Most students in this area have had to travel long distances to other regions for university studies. We are targeting students in this region and those from Kenya,” Osinde said. He said other programmes would be added each year, depending on the number of applicants.

Sh11m for school library
LUWEERO
St Kizito Minor Seminary, Nandere, recently raised sh11m in cash and pledges for the completion of a sh28m library, at a fundraising function at Pope Paul Memorial Centre, Ndeeba. The construction work has already started. The rector of the seminary, Fr. Emmanuel Ssita, said they did not have a modern library, despite the fact that the school had been in existence for seven years. “Being a rural school, students from this and other schools, as well as parents and locals, will have access to the library as part of the school’s contribution in promoting a learning culture,” said Ssita.

MP to reward best schools

In a bid to improve the academic performance of primary and secondary schools, the area MP, David Oceng, has promised to award the best performing schools in the Uganda National Examinations Board exams. While meeting headteachers recently, Oceng said teachers are the leaders in the fight against ignorance. He added that teachers need to go for further studies and also become computer literate. The LC5 chairman of Paicho sub-county, Alex Otim, pledged to work together with teachers to do all they can to ensure that students excel in the national exams.
