TEACHERS in Kampala district have appealed to the city council to renovate dilapidated classrooms in government-aided schools.

Speaking during the World Teachers Day celebrations last Friday, Stephen Legesi Mwanika, the chairperson of the Uganda National Teachers’ Union Kampala, said almost all the buildings in government-aided schools are death traps.

“Apart from Kitante Primary School, which is being renovated for CHOGM, other schools have cracked buildings. This affects our (teachers’) performance,” he argued.
Legesi said teachers could perform better if the Government invested more in education and improved the learning environment.

He urged the Government to increase teachers’ salaries, adding that the cost of living had gone up. The theme of the celebrations was ‘Quality teachers for quality education. Better working conditions for the teachers means better learning conditions for learners.’

The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation and the International Labour Organisation declared October 5, the world teachers’ day.

This year’s national celebrations were held in Kabale but Kampala celebrated theirs on October 26.
