BUSOGA Kingdom is to contribute sh10m towards the development of Bishop James Hannington Memorial Site in Mayuge district. This was revealed by the Kyabazinga, Henry Wako Muloki, while officiating at this year’s Bishop Hannington Memorial Day celebrations at Kyando in Mayuge on Sunday.

Hannington was killed on October 29, 1885 on the orders of King Mwanga of Buganda.

Muloki said the site had great historical significance and it should not be left to rot.

“I call upon the Basoga to mobilise resources to transform the area. If we work as a team, we shall transform this place into a memorial spot.”

The chief celebrant, Bishop Michael Kyomya, urged the people to emulate the life of Bishop Hannington.

“He was dedicated to missionary work in spite of the problems he went through. In the same vein, Christians should serve God wholeheartedly without thinking of what reward they will get in return.”

Kyomya said the attitude of “Nfuniramu wa?” (How will I benefit) should be discouraged for it fails God’s ministry. He urged the locals to give generously towards the development of the memorial site.

The Jinja Archdeaconry organising committee chairman, Patrick Kulazikulabe, said they needed about sh13m to complete the projects aimed at developing the site. So far, they have over sh2m.

A Bishop Hannington monument and church will be constructed and the fountain will be fenced. The committee asked the House of Bishops to name Bishop Hannington a martyr.

The site is located on over 300 acres of land but 90% of it is not developed.
