NEW pay-television GTV, will broadcast the region’s premier soccer competition, the Senior Challenge Cup next month. The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) becomes the second beneficiary after Ugandan soccer governing body FUFA, to land a GTV sponsorship deal in Africa.

A four-year $6million (sh10bn) contract to help raise the standards in the competition for national teams in the region, was signed between CECAFA secretary Nicholas Musonye and GTV Business Development Manager, Ronnie Andrews, at Norfolk Hotel in Nairobi.

Andrews said the investment package to the regional body will encompass production, sponsorship, promotion, prizes and other incentives to accelerate the development of the Senior Challenge Cup.

GTV will acquire exclusive media and commercial rights to broadcast the Challenge Cup live across Africa. This, he observed, will increase its international appeal.

An annual $1.5m sponsorship will cater for tickets for all the teams, referees and officials, accommodation, the host federation and CECAFA.

Prize money has also been allocated to the winners with the first team receiving $30,000. Runners up will get $20,000 and third placed teams $10,000.

CECAFA’s new national team sponsorship comes after the expiry of a three-year contract by Ethiopian tycoon Sheikh Al Amoudi. President Paul Kagame of Rwanda sponsors the club competition.

CECAFA is the oldest soccer grouping on the continent. It was founded unofficially in 1927 with Uganda and Kenya competing against each other in the Gossage Cup, which later became the Senior Challenge Cup. Uganda has won the Challenge Cup nine times.

Musonye said the arrival of GTV should drastically change the face of football in Africa’s oldest regional body, adding that the sponsorship was a culmination of five months of negotiations between him and GTV.

“Football as a mass movement should be developed professionally and should inspire other sports disciplines in East and Central Africa. We believe this engagement will propel CECAFA into another era of football development,” Musonye said.

GTV came onto the Ugandan television scene this year. They provided historic telecasts of the Ugandan Super League across Africa last Friday.
