THE Ministry of Defence has released sh1.3b to pay outstanding salary arrears for former Amuka militiamen. The UPDF 5th Division spokesman, Lt. Deo Asimwe Akiiki, said in a press release recently that payments began on Monday at Lira Army Barracks.

The defence state minister, Ruth Nankabirwa, and the army commander for land forces, Lt. Gen. Katumba Wamala, while visiting Lira four months ago, promised that the Government would pay the money.

Akiiki said those to be paid are Amuka deserters, those demobilised last December but were paid half of their salary arrears and those who died while in service.

The pay team, Akiiki revealed, is headed by Lt. Col. Dick Olum, the commandant of the Junior Staff College in Jinja, an auditor from the Ministry of Defence, Mike Eperu and Capt. Achoka, an officer from the office of the army chief controller of finance.

Akiiki asked those claiming money for fallen militiamen to present proper identification and documents pertaining to the deceased.

“Unclear identification will lead to the return of the money to the ministry by the pay team,” Akiiki said.

He added that the payment was the last as the Amuka militia and the Arrow Boys were being phased out.

The Amuka militia was formed to fight the Lord’s Resistance Army rebel incursions in Lango

The Arrow Boys, under Capt. Mike Mukula and Musa Ecweru, fought the rebels in Teso.
