HUNDREDS of music fans thronged Christ the King Church in Kampala on Monday to bid farewell to popular Ugandan disc jockey, DJ Bangi. Wilfred Bangirana, popularly known as DJ Bangi, died on Sunday at his home in Naalya, a Kampala suburb.

The requiem mass was led by musician priest, Fr. Anthony Musaala.

Thereafter, the music lovers lined up to pay their last respects during the public viewing of his body at the church.

The cortege was later transported to his ancestral home in Rukinga, Sheema sub-county in Bushenyi district for burial today.

Bangi was born on January 17, 1963. He attended Kitante Primary School in Kampala, Ntare School in Mbarara district and Namasagali College in Kamuli district.

He graduated with a degree in Law from Makerere University in 1987 but never practiced, preferring to pursue a career in entertainment.

He worked as a presenter on various radio stations like Radio One, Capital Radio, Radio Sanyu and on WBS television.

He was also a deejay at Ange-noir discotheque in Kampala. Bangi, who was famous for his ‘oldies’ music, was recently admitted to Mulago Hospital following a stroke.

He is survived by a widow, Christine, a daughter, Melissa and an adopted son Toby.

Charlie Lubega, the proprietor of Ange-noir, announced the establishment of the Bangi Trust, which will go towards supporting the orphans.

The trust will be funded by 50% of the money collected at the discotheque’s entrance every first Friday of December, yearly.
