SOME sections of the N*orthern Bypass have been provisionally opened to motorists, the Road Agency Formation Unit (RAFU) spokesperson, Dan Alinange, has said. The 5km-stretch from Busega to Hoima Road and the section from Gayaza Road to Naalya, covering about 8km is now open.

“We have allowed motorists to use part of the road where we have put both layers of bitumen.

“The only remaining work in these sections is to put up road markings, signs and guardrails for security,” Alinange said.

The sh118b road funded by the European Union is expected to be complete by March 2008, Alinange stated.

He revealed that the contractors were now concentrating on the major junctions at Bwaise, Namboole and Kisaasi, which have overpasses.

After which, he added, work on roundabouts would begin.

Alinange said the works ministry would decide whether the road should be officially opened for use during this month’s Commonwealth meeting.

He said the decision to provisionally open the road was because motorists had for long been inconvenienced.

Alinange clarified that continous rains that had led to flooding in Bwaise and Kalerwe, affected the completion of the road.
