YOUTHFUL Flavia Namakula, 23, shoulders Uganda’s hopes in the Uganda Ladies Golf Open that tees off this morning at Kitante course.

Namakula, who has won numerous competitions this season, appears to be in good shape to end foreign dominance of the tournament. The 2003 champion Esther Okullo was the last Ugandan to win the 54-hole event.

“Namakula is our best youngster and I think can make it. She has moved from handicap 24 to 10 in just six months. But don’t underrate the other top Ugandan women. This time the trophy is remaining in Kampala,” Uganda Ladies Golf Union (ULGU) president Alice Owori warned.
Namakula will be making a first appearance in the tournament.

Local stars Monica Ntege, Jenina Nasimolo, Cecilia Lwanga and Eva Okatch among others, will be out to tame defending champion Mary Karano of Kenya.

But the Ugandans also face a host of Tanzanian competitors including 2005 winner Sophia Viggo. The three-day event will tee off at 10:00am.
