CULTURAL leaders have been invited to attend a state banquet to be hosted by the Queen for Heads of Government attending the Commonwealth summit (CHOGM) at State House Entebbe.
“All traditional leaders recognised by the Constitution will have an opportunity to meet the Queen. They will be introduced and have a hand shake with her,†the foreign affairs minister, Sam Kutesa, said yesterday.
He told the Parliament select committee on CHOGM that the banquet, which will be held on November 22, will be the only function that day.
Leaders of political parties will attend the official opening of CHOGM at Serena Hotel and will also attend some cocktails, Kutesa said.
He added that MPs will be represented by committee chairpersons and MPs on the CHOGM select committee. “MPs will see the Queen during her address to Parliament.â€
Kutesa told the committee chaired by Onyango Kakoba (NRM) that the Queen, who will pay a three-day state visit to Uganda before CHOGM, will be accompanied by Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles of Wales and Camilla Parker, the Duchess of Cornwall.
He said the Cabinet sub-committee had recommended that November 22 and 23 be declared public holidays to enable easy movement of the delegates.
Kutesa said the Government had extended the CHOGM works deadline from November 10 to 17. “It is not practically possible to prepare every road now. I cannot say we have perfect arrangements but we are ready for CHOGM.â€
