THE Uganda Ladies Open title eluded Ugandan golfers for the fourth year running after Kenyan star Mary Karano’s victory on Sunday.

Karano retained Uganda’s premier ladies award with ease at the par-72 Kitante course.

The Nairobi-based player was 14 strokes (229) better than Uganda’s best performer Jasper Kamukama in the 54-hole stroke play event.
Kamukama’s colleagues Eva Okatch and Jenina Nasimolo also finished among the top six.

Karano’s win further stretched foreign players’ dominance at the expense of their Ugandan rivals.
Karano emulated Tanzania’s Sophie Viggo who was champion in 2005 and another Kenyan Rose Naliaka in 2004.

Next year’s event will present a fresh chance for Ugandans to reclaim the title after Esther Okullo’s success in 2003.
Karano led right after Friday’s opening round to reclaim the award.

“After realising that I was likely going to win again, I vowed not to come back next year,” Karano remarked.

“I thought other players should be given a chance to win as well but I think as champion, I need to boost the event by defending the title.”
Karano took a five stroke lead on Friday, was nine better on Saturday before clinching victory on Sunday.

The Uganda Ladies Golf Union event attracted over 100 players from Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
The competition was sponsored by Celtel Uganda and Standard Chartered Bank.
